Admittedly, I have not heard of Dr Seuss or the Lorax before the movie. In case you are wondering, I did have a childhood… just that nor Dr Suess or Lorax was in it.
And in case you are like me, Dr Seuss was a well known children book writer and The Lorax is one of his esteemed works, known for delivering a stern warning of the damages of industrialization on the environment through personification.
Thanks to UIP and omy, I finally got acquainted with the story, albeit two decades late and no longer a child.
But it didn’t take very long for me to take a liking to the movie; the vibrant colours, catchy songs and striking characters really brought the story to life. The 3D experience added the icing on the cake. What I liked most about the movie is that every character is developed wholly that they create such a deep impression; from the Lorax to the feisty granny to the cute innocent little bear.
Set in the town of Thneedville where trees were a thing of the past and fresh air had to be bought in the form of bottles, twelve-year-old Ted (Zac Efron), enamored with Audrey whose greatest wish is to see a real tree, sets out in search for it. In his adventure, he was led to Once-ler (Ed Helms) who narrated the story of how he was responsible for turning the world from one of colourful flora and fauna, bustling with animal life to the vacated barren wasteland. Presented with one last “Truffula seed”, Ted has to evade the evil thwarts of the mercenary O’Hare (Rob Riggle) to bring back trees to Thneedville.
An animated movie with embedded pro-conservation notions; a must-watch for viewers of all ages.
